Knowing the importance of digestive efficiency, Nutrena created a proprietary digestive health blend called Nutri-Bloom Advantage®. This exclusive combination of ingredients was designed to support fermentative digestion and help horses get the most out of their diets. Since hindgut performance is hard to see, Nutrena partnered with Texas A&M University on a research trial to quantify the impact of Nutri-Bloom Advantage®.

Texas A&M sampled 18 mature geldings on the same control diet prior to the start of testing. Utilizing a randomized complete block design, horses were blocked by age and body weight, then randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments (n = 9 horses*) for the 28-day trial. Dietary treatments shared controls such as type of hay, nutrient analysis, % bodyweight fed, same calorie content, same crude protein, dry lot between meals, etc. The only variable was some horses received pellets with Nutri-Bloom Advantage® fortification. Then on day 25-28 of the trial, there were four total fecal collection periods analyzed for weight and nutrient apparent digestibility.

Ultimately, the trial found that horses who consumed diets fortified with Nutri-Bloom Advantage® demonstrated up to 15% improvement in apparent fiber digestibility from their hay and feed concentrate rations. An improvement in digestive efficiency means more calories are available from the same amount of feed and forage. Another way to look at it is less feed is required to meet the same energy requirement.
